I like both towns. Montefalco has a church with famous frescoes, Bevagna has a wonderful main piazza. I would chose whichever hotel/vaction rental looks best. The towns are very close together - and beautifully situated.
(But I have not stayed in either town - we stayed in Spello.)
I'd only opt for Montefalco because it has fantastic views from the front of the town. Looking out across most of central Umbria, you understand why they call it the "balcony of Umbria". A bottle of wine of an evening, watching the lights come on all over the valley and the hill towns on the other side (Assisi, Todi, Spello and Spoletto), would be magic.

Hi, Both are lovely but you may want to try L'Orta Degli Angeli in Bevagna www.ortoangeli.it Rooms from 130 euros. Gavin is quite right about Montefalco, the views are exceptional but then it's nickname is "the balcony of Umbria"! You may want to try Vila Pambuffetti here.

Bevagna, being in the valley, is more prone to hot, muggy days in the summer, and fog in the winter, but I think in October you wouldn't really find either of those climatic conditions. I'd go with Montefalco for the view, but Orto degli Angeli in Bevagna is certainly charming. Hmmm....
I've never slept in either town, since always living close by. I'd probably stay in Bevagna because of the town's pleasant, open, and untouristy evening life.
I've eaten at the Orto degli Angeli twice: interesting and not unpleasant recreations of medieval Italian food. The Orto partly occupies the remains of a Roman theatre and temple complex, most visible in the dining-room and the garden. (Yeah, not quite your thing; still --)
I ate somewhere in Montefalco, outdoors on a patio wondering when the next earthquake shock was coming (this was the actual day of the Umbrian earthquake in 1997); it was quite good. I guess I've come away with the feeling that Bevagna is an evening place, Montefalco a daytime.
Thank-you all for your insights. I'm leaning towards L'Orto degli Angeli; my primary goal is a good location from which to take day trips. It sounds like either would be a rewarding choice.
