its about 230km (about 2 1/2 hours) from portofino to nice.

its about 660km (about 6 3/4 hours) from portofino to monoco.

google "michelin driving directions" and you can get all kinds of details about driving anywhere.

Tina,

The distance given for Nice is correct, but the distance given for Monoco is not correct.

It is a shorter drive to get to Monoco than to Nice. Monoco is about a 2 and a quarter hour drive from Portofino, and Nice is another 20 minutes or so...

Elizabetta, maybe you were thinking of Munich (Monoco di Bavaria) when you mentioned 660 km?

Easy (except the Genoa part) and pretty drive along the coast. You should be in Nice in 2-2 1/2 hours, Monaco in less...

Yes. I think it is worth it. Nice is just wonderful (I prefer it to Monte Carlo) and will give you a nice contrast to small, styled, Italian Portofino. Nice's historic center has alot of the flavor of the old French colonies--lots of color, fragrance, warmth, charm.... and a splash of the outer edges of Provence as well. We go there for day trips a couple of times a year so that I can pick up things like coriander seed in bulk and dried spices from Algeria and Morocco.

I say go for it!

No border patrol between Schengen countries, you drive through and WHAM you are in France. The toll systems are different. In Italy, you get a ticket when you get on the Autostrada and you hand in your ticket at the turnstile and pay at the end, or when you get off (it would be about 11 or 12 euros or so I think from Portofino to the border). Then in France, you pay every several kilometers (there are turnstyles which cross the highway which you stop at and pay). You can use credit cards or cash.

A day trip would be fine, an overnight would also be fine. Just depends how much time you want to be away from Portofino. The ride is nice, along the ocean, and not difficult (except, as Megan said, around Genoa, where you just have to watch the signage so you don't end up visiting me in Piemonte!!! BUt I would give you a glass of wine and send you on to Nice...)
