Well I can't agree with you all the time Letizia! I know nothing about visits (a different matter altogether, really), but Sportoletti's wine is, even for boozing it up on the terrace after a rough day of sightseeing, not quite up to snuff in my book. Spello's Villa Fidelia, as a place, is pretty (and has bits and pieces of Roman remains), but I saw no winemaking on the premises a few years ago and you've thrown me for a loop??
Ahi Bill yes, it is healthy to have a little disagreement every once in a while! Villa Fidelia Red is Sportoletti's premium wine. They got a lot of press, including Wine Spectator, with it and I know that it is retailed for seriously high prices in the US. And for their regular wine, are you talking about the Assisi rosso or the Grechetto? The Grechetto is not really much, but we like the Assisi rosso. It has been granted the quality/price "oscar" by Gambero rosso for several years in a row if that means something to anyone. I must add that I only know the Sportoletti since three years and I have heard that they used to produce more ordinary wine. This has changed since the famous Riccardo Cotarella makes some of their wine. Said this, I am no wine expert nor I drink by names....
I don't think they're affiliated with Villa Fidelia itself. They just happen to be down the road from it. They've built a whole new cantina in the past year or two.
I, myself, do like the Assisi Rosso as an everyday wine. It seems to really differ from year to year, though, so maybe a different vintage would be more pleasing to some. I've got some Villa Fidelia red in the cellar but want to wait a while before cracking it open.
