Wow, with the dollar weakness it's getting expensive to travel. I looked at all 3 places where we have stayed before but would prefur to spend less,in some cases the rates have doubled in the last few years!

I know I can search under the reviews, but most have no prices and even most websites are elusive about prices.

It is only going to be for a few nights as the bulk of our next trip will be hiking the AV1 in the Dolomites. So probably one night at the begining and 3-4 at the end (sadly) in total. RR

You might want to try Hotel Al Ponte Mocenigo. If they aren't all booked up, I recall that they have a few double rooms in the 85-95 euro range. Mom and I stayed there in March 2006 and loved it.

Period you're traveling in? That will make a difference. What amenities do you need besides spotless and a bathroom in your room?

Al Palazzetto is one option, Ponte Chiodo might be another.

I think that the reviews should have a section about price. Other than not being cheated and being clean, it is one of my top search items. Often you have to email jsut to find out how mcuh it costs. You don't even know if you are in the right league.

I'm not sure when you're going, but Leon Bianco's minimum rate is 130 euro. It's a nice hotel (if you can climb stairs)-- very basic and reasonable with a great view.

Locando Leon Biance

Here's my review:

Check out Hotel al Leon (hotelalleon.com). We booked months in advance for August '06 and they gave us a significant discount (E85/night if I remember correctly).

Robert-I just submitted a review on B&B Al Palazzetto. It was 138 euro each night, but that was about the least expensive we could find. We just stayed there last month. It was clean and quiet. It is just a few minutes walk from the Ca'd'Oro vaporetto stop. What we liked the most about it was that it was so quiet.

You may want to try these 2 B&Bs in Dorsoduro. I have no recommendations for them, and have not stayed there.

There are two reviews for Al Palazzetto, one from May of this year by Barb and mine from October 2006 and both mention the price paid for the room. Prices are also posted on the website.

I can vouch for the Salute da Cici. Tried it a few years back, and I know people who've stayed there since and have been happy with it.

Robert

We stayed at the Hotel Biasin in Cannareggio in April 2001 and would stay there again in cool weather. (No A/C) We had room 1 in the Hotel Biasin which was pretty nice and overlooked the canal.

This was on our first trip to Italy and we made the mistake of not booking Easter weekend in advance. We stayed there the night of Easter and a night or two after that. I felt very lucky to have found this because it was also spring break for the European Universities and college backpackers were everywhere.

Venere has some current reviews about this place and the Hotel Marte across the canal (which is where the receptions is. ( up three fligts of stairs....if you know you have a room at the Biasin, don't drag you luggage all the way up to the reception area of the Hotel Marte.)

We will be traveling at the optimum hiking time which for the Dolomites is
September. It will be the begining of sept to take advantage of the labor day holiday. So potentally only one night and then a few nights maybe 3-4 at the end.

It looks like its going to take more than 100 euro. All we require is relative quiet and a bathroom in suite. I have liked the Locanda Art Deco,
Locanda Florita and a long time ago the Riva. Now they are all 130-180 euro/night! RR

These are all San Marco, in high season...you'll be lucky to find 130. If San Marco's your thing, try B&B al Teatro, behind the Fenice (but she said just the other day she was already receiving bookings for May and June. Amazing, really...).

Robert, if you are willing to stay just outside Venice, we had a good experience at the Casa Villa Gardenia B&B in Marghera -- 85 euro a night. I wrote about it here in a trip report. I would agree that it is nicer to stay right in Venice, but we needed to be someplace where we could have a car, and this B&B had free parking, plus being a very quick trip across the causeway to Venice.

I've had some good luck in the past booking last-minute rooms on OctopusTravel - for about 85euros/night :-)
(that was way low season in November though)

I'm not commited to San Marco but I do want to stay in Venice. I looked at the Salute which seems nice but is 150, so if thats the going rate we may as well stay in an old favorite. RR

You could try Locanda Gaffaro in Dorsoduro. I stayed there in 2006 and just sent some friends there this summer and they enjoyed it. In 2006 I paid 65Euro for a single. That was in low season.

Two years ago we stayed at the Ca' Dogaressa in Cannaregio, and enjoyed it a lot. Paolo, the owner, was very helpful, although he speaks little English. There is no elevator. The website says they have AC, although I don't believe they did 2 years ago. Breakfast was adequate, but nothing special. Close to a vaporetta stop. We stayed in the room pictured in the center photo on the website. Room was small, but lovely. Bathroom great.

Website says double standard is 85 euro.

I bookmarked the hotel it looks great. I wonder if they have a minimum night stay? We may have just one night on the way in and 3 on the way out to the Dolomoites. Stairs - we are on our way to a 150 km hike! Breakfast who cares
its mostly the same everywhere. But air conditioning end august and mid sept?

We stayed at the Hotel Galleria in September 2005 ... it is a great little hotel with a perfect location right on the Grand Canal at the Academia Bridge ... Rooms were around $138.00 US dollars, but we paid in cash and got the room for around $100.00... Here is the link to the hotel:

If you are looking for a clean and quaint hotel with a great location...I would highly recommend Hotel Galleria.

Actually, I was thinking about my AC statement. We were there in October and didn't really need AC so we kept the windows opened - but I do remember individual thermostats and I'm pretty sure they had AC. Sorry for misrepresenting it. I do believe their website. They were sooo nice. They were so worried about us missing a train, (and we did) that they were practically running with our luggage to the vaporetto. Very nice people.
