I was under the impression that I had to go to the Italian Embassy in the US to obtain a long stay visa. In reading the thread paperwork it seemed that I have to go to the local police station in the town where I am staying. So, just were to I go to obtain this visa? Luigina

The long stay Visa needs to be obtained from your local Italian Consulate. Once you arrive you must apply for the Permesso di Soggiorno or Permit to Stay at the local Questura.
