We have just been quoted Cdn $468.45 for 9 days pick up and drop off Malpensa airport economy manual transmission with a free upgrade to the next class. (includes all taxes and insurance but excludes daily road tax)
Does that seem like a decent price??

Yes, it does seem like a very decent price. Also, depending on when you are leaving, AutoEurope will allow you to take advantage of lower rates if available before you depart. I've already done that once since my initial reservation.

That is a great rate, klc. I would recommend that you put in a request for a disel. Mileage is better, fuel is less expensive to buy by about 40%.

I hesitated getting diesel having owned a diesel Mercedes that scared me to death when trying to merge on the freeway, it had no pickup. This was several years ago, do the new diesels have some more life in them? After reading the horror stories of the autostrada I thought we should have some get up and go!

The new diesels are nothing like the old ones. In fact, I can't tell the difference in performance. Just be very careful to put the right fuel in the tank. Gasoline is called: benzina Diesel is called: gasolio

That is $52/day - not the best rate, not the worst. Oops CDN - when translated to USD that is a good rate. But perhaps too small a car? What model do they list for economy? It might not be that expensive to go up a size. We usually rent a VW Golf or Alfa 146 size - that is good on the autostrada and small enough for easy parking.
Diesel cars are very different now - they handle well and have good pickup. I thought diesel was only available in the larger sizes, but might be wrong about that. The time we went up a size to Alfa 156, we had a diesel.
If you can find a cheaper rate, send it to them and they will come down. They had quoted me over $600 for a week in Sicily (compact automatic) and came down to $430 when I sent them a competative rate from ItalybyCar. I booked with them after all the raves from posters here.
Our initial rate from AutoEurope was $790 for 16 days. I sent them a comparison from Sixt(which did not include all the coverage AE gives) and they lowered the rate to $555 for 16 days.
AutoEurope has been doing some specials including automatic one grade upgrades, i.e. economy to compact and compact to mid-size. Check with them to see whether they have upgrades. Also, if you are a member of an automobile club, like AAA in the States, ask whether they have a discount. It's possible that you'll get a few dollars off the rental price.
good luck. If you can get a diesel, go with it. Save you money as others have indicated.

Is this generally the case? We have recently started to rent from AutoEurope, but find that they are not as cheap as we can get elsewhere. On our last trip, the difference was about £35 on a 4 day rental of £165 (i.e. the best alternative was £130). When I phoned AutoEurope they said that the other deal was not comparable because of the extra insurance cover offered by AutoEurope. On that occasion I was too busy to spend much time on working out the comparison, but I think that if we had factored in the cost of the extra insurance, the alternative firm would still have been marginally cheaper.

We just booked a car from autoeuropa.it for 7 days next week in Sicily for Euro 180. Small car (fiat punto, ford ka, ecc), no extra insurance and low season, but a good rate just the same.
To BeeBee I could not believe the lower quote when it was emailed to me from AutoEurope!! I immediately paid with Visa in case they changed their mind. Actually the price I paid was not $555-it was $519!!! All ins and charges included-road tax($2-$4 a day) not included. Still,a great deal!
I will "second" on the diesel they are nothing like the old ones. Very little noise or vibration, almost no smell, and they are actually easier to drive because of the way in which a diesel engine develops its power you will not have to downshift as often, unless you need the quick acceleration. The fuel is cheaper and the car goes further on a "gallon" Once again, make sure to put in the correct fuel...!!
