Hello - I am traveling to Italy in two weeks, and my passport expires at the end of July. I have read that I could encounter problems if my passport expires less than six months upon my return (May 27). Has anyone had any experience in this situation? Has your almost-expired passport been okay on your travels? I have an appt. with the state dept. for an expedited renewal, but am very nervous that something will go wrong, and I won't have my new passport in time. I would rather have my current one, than nothing. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for posting this question Linda. I'm leaving next week for a 2 and 1/2 week to Italy and my passport expires sometime in October or November. Had never heard about the six month rule so am definitely interested in whether I need to run over to the passport agency. Thanks.
There's a current discussion going on in the Everything About Travel forum, Passport Expiration Rules which also has a link in it to another discussion regarding this issue from February.
I was stopped once leaving for Ireland and they were not going to let me on the plane becasaue my passport expired in 4 months!!! I threw a huge fit becasue I am married to a European, was travelling escorting my european KID and have documentation that allows me to be living and working in Europe...and they let it go after lots of arguing and speaking to many supervisers(!!) i do not think they would have let me on gthe plane had I not had proper EU documentation in addition to my US passport...guess they figured it was my own problem if I could not get back in :-) We almost missed the plane it took sos lone to convince them to let me on!
