Hello experienced travellers,

Some background. There are 5 of us ...my husband and myself and our daughters 12 & 16... and my father-in-law who has bad knees and of course what ever light luggage we can manage. Pop can walk about but needs not to overdo it (subject for another post!)We will be flying up from Bari to Florence, spending 2 or 3 nights in Florence, then renting a car and spending 3 nights in Tuscany (C'asole d'Elsa). After Tuscany we plan to spend 3 nights in Venice before getting one of those dirt cheap flights Venice to Paris.

I am trying to figure out the best way to get arounnd with the easiest transitions between the different modes of transportation. Time is as valuable as money (within reason.

How to get from Florence Airport to Florence on a Monday afternoon in June. We plan on using taxi's in Florence. But rent a car for Tuscany. Does it make sense to get the car at the airport and then just park it in Florence until we need it a few days later for Tuscany? Or taxi from airport. How easy or time consuming will it be to go through the rental process on a Wed evening?

When we are ready to leave Tuscany and head to Venice should we drive or drop the car at some point and take a train into Venice. I thought arriving by Train might be easier since we won't need a car in Venice anyway. I also wanted to get the girls on a train since my husband and I have fond train memories from Eurail days 25 years ago.

How easy would it be to drop the car in Florence or elsewhere en-route near a train station with a train to Venice?

But maybe just driving in and dropping off the car in Venice is easier?

What would be the easiest connection to water taxi and hotel...after dropping off a car rental or stepping off of a train?

Thanks so much
Liz

Hi Liz-

A search of the board brings up some recent discussions about your questions: here is one, but there are many more.

A taxi (or 2, given 5 people and luggage) from the airport into the center of Florence is probably the best way to go. The airport in Florence is tiny, and there is a queue of taxis just outside the arrival terminal.

Have a look at AutoEurope for rental cars. They offer several locations from different agencies in the center of Florence, and it is possible to rent a car there and return it in Venice.

You can search the board to find info about returning the car in Venice and how to connect to transportation to your hotel there.
