My son will be leaving us early on a Monday morning. He has an 8am flight. So I was thinking he should take the bus back to Rome Sunday evening and we would put him up at the airport Hilton. Then he would just check in, sleep and walk to the airport.
But, from what I can tell, there is only 1 bus on a Sunday, and fairly early in the day. So maybe he would be better staying in Rome and taking a cab.
Jan, Given the price and rather sterile atmosphere of the FCO Hilton, I would think your son would have a better last night in Rome staying at a hotel in Rome and taking a shuttle service to FCO on Monday morning. It probably woudl cost about the same. We just took an 8 am flight ourselves this week; admittedly it was not fun having a car pick us up at 5:30 am, but we really enjoyed our last night in Trastevere that way. The train from Siena requires a change, but it was easy to do (we got to Siena that way and I bet we had more baggage than your son), or if the bus gets him to Rome later in the day, even better. Rachel (our daughter) had a morning flight to Athens later this week and she chose to stay at a hostel in Rome the night before for the reasons above; she said she was glad she had done it that way. Hope this helps some. Marcia
Wow, that's confusing Jan. I would think that the times up until the "B" column would work, but it would be easy to misinterpret that thing.
Adding on the time to get to the bus from Tiburtina to the airport, it looks like the bus and train options each will take about four hours. In that situation, I'd opt for the train because I find them more comfortable than a bus. However, the train requires a couple of changes (at Chiusi and Termini, in most cases). Chiusi is a small, but not tiny, station and changing there is relatively easy (but might require going down a flight of stairs and back up again). The change at Termini requires the now almost legendary hike from the main tracks to the Leonardo Express tracks.
My brother had an early flight and took the train from Tuscany to the airport the night before. He thought about Rome, but decided that he probably wouldn't do much of interest by himself for one night, so he chose to stay at the airport Hilton and sleep in the next morning, vs. the early pick up hassle. In a couple of weeks I'll have one night by myself in Rome before my flight home, and I'm going to stay in the city. To each his own.

I've done it both ways and I agree that although the Hilton is a little sterile, it is quite nice and hassle free in the morning. You are literally a three minute covered walk from the terminal.
We took the train early, arrived in Rome late afternoon, had a nap, dinner and left early the next day.
