Our book selection for June is A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle.
This has been an Oprah book selection and because of her deep appreciation of the book and the message, she set up weekly online classes, or webinars, for readers everywhere to participate in the discussion of each section of Tolle's book.
Tolle says his philosophy, which includes Buddhist, Christian and Islamic influences, is "not like academic study with new information you have to absorb. Rather, it's about uncovering what's already in you, getting at that deeper level." He lives in Vancouver, BC and worked with Oprah to produce their webinars co-operatively.
Oprah believes that's especially true for "midlifers. There's been a lot written lately about midlife depression. Suddenly, mid-lifers have so many options. Their children are grown and they're asking themselves, 'What do I do now? Who am I?' They're looking at the possibility of a second life, at reinventing themselves."
This should be an interesting book to read...I'm reading a few pages at a time and then putting it down to absorb what I've read. Let us know what you think!
"I have mixed feelings about "A New Earth". While I thought some very good points were made, I didn't find it easy to read because the style of writing is so dense. Many of the ideas that Tolle presents are not original (e.g. how we interpret people or events is a result of our own thoughts or egos, we must strive to live in the present moment), but they are still well made and thought-provoking." ~ Julie Flyte Brenda
