I'm traveling from Toronto to New Orleans by train with stops in Chicago, Memphis and Jackson. I only have 3 days in each city. I'd love the luxury of a week but it's not possible. Does anyone have suggestions as to how to keep a slow approach - the benefits of slow travel - in just 3 days?

Thanks. I'll get the hang of this yet.

This will be my first time in each of these cities and I don't want to be running around trying to see everything. I would enjoy sitting back and watch the world go by just as much. Thing is, you have to know the right vantage points.

All ideas welcome.

When is the trip? If you haven't chosen lodgings, this place was recommended to me by slow traveler Deborah -

Yes, the basics are done. Train ticket and accommodation booked. I'm just now looking at how I'm going to spend time in each city.

I'm going to use a Greeter in Chicago and Memphis. That should be good to get me oriented. My thing is that I have a tendency in a short time to want to do too much.

The first leg of my trip is done and I took it slow. Walking, cycling and using transit in Chicagao really made the different. It gives time for reflection as does blogging about the experience. The latter makes me stop and think about what I did, why and whether it was a good move. Now I'm in Memphis. I hear there's a great park system along the Mississippi. There are a few musts like Graceland but will take the time to wander as well.

Other ideas?

I've not been to Memphis yet, but one day I'll visit Graceland!

Click on the link for a discussion from 2007 about Memphis, and here are more comments from a different thread.

1) Eat all the pork BBQ you can, it's the best on the planet. For ribs go to Central BBQ, Leonard's or Germantown Commissary. Corky's and the Rendevous are tourist traps. For chopped pork BBQ sandwiches go to the 3 places I mentioned or Tops and The BBQ Shoppe.

2) Memphis has great attractions, most notably Graceland. Yes, it's campy but worth a visit. Also visit the Pink Palace and check out what may be going on with the Wonder Series and Visit Stax Records. http://www.memphismuseums.org
For nightlife, there's no more vibrant place in the city than around Beale Street. Music, bars, crowds of people. You can go to the Gibson Guitar Factory which is close. Also check out a Memphis Redbirds minor league baseball game, the park is new and right in the city.
Looking forward to reading about *your* adventures!
