I am considering going on a cruise to Bermuda in May 2008. The port of call is Kings Wharf. I will have several days there. My concern is that this port seems to be rather isolated from the rest of the island. From your experiences, is it difficult to travel to other parts of Bermuda? Is it very time consuming? Expensive?
All suggestions are welcomed..
Thanks!
Andrea

I took a cruise to Bermuda in 2002. We docked at St. Georges and at Hamilton. I purchased a bus pass and found that the transportation system was great. There are also ferries. We had no trouble taking public transportation to the better beaches and shopping spots. Food on the island is expensive but that's why it's nice to take a cruise. You can go shopping or to a beach and then go back on the ship to eat lunch/dinner.
You may get some useful information at www.bermuda.com. Bermuda is beautiful and since it's so close to the US, you get to spend a lot of quality time enjoying the sights.

Thanks for the information! I would prefer it if the ship stopped at these ports. But since it doesn't, it puts me in a bind. I believe one option would be to take a ferry to Hamilton and stay at a hotel for the night. I am in Bermuda from Wed. morning to Friday 5pm. I thought perhaps renting a hotel room for Thursday night. What do you think? Suggested inexpensive accomodations?
Is the area around Kings Wharf worth seeing?
Thanks!

Kings Wharf is at the Dockyards. It is interesting to browse around there, but you can do that in half a day.
Transportation is very good. From King's Wharf, you can take a ferry to either Hamilton or St. George. The ferry doesn't take much time at all -- 20 minutes to Hamilton and 45 minutes to St. George, so don't worry about having to book a hotel in Hamilton. The transportation pass, which you can buy by the day or for longer perios, covers the busses and the ferries. the bus is much slower, but it is a good way to see Bermuda and, other than taxis, the only way to get to the beaches.
We didn't do too many activities because we were there with my elderly parents. But we did go to the Crystal Caves, which were nice. We also did some browsing around St. George (walk up to the unfinished church). There is also SCUBA and hard hat diving, which we didn't do. Also sailing and fishing.
