I am going to the Florida Keys in October and would like to know the best places for snorkeling. Also is it better to take a snorkeling tour farther out to the ocean or just snorkle from the beach? This is my first time in the Keys. Thanks!

Lisa,

One of the best places to snorkel, from the beach, it at Bahia Honda State Park which is located just across the 7 Mile Bridge from Marathon. They rent snorkeling equipment in the gift shop and it is a state park. It also has the nicest beaches of anyplace in the Keys.

If you feel adventurous, you can take the boat to the Dry Tortugas for snorkeling but it is a long ride (all day trip) and it normally includes a stop at the Fort in the Tortugas. You get those boats from Key West.

Where are you staying in the Keys? Upper, Middle or Key West?

Another great spot is John Pennekamp Marine Park on Key Largo. Snorkeling, scuba and other boat trips are available. Here's the link http://www.pennekamppark.com/
