I have just been told I may have to travel there at the end of next month. Will arrive early Sat. am leave Sunday night. Need cheap safe hotel that has access to some sites.I was there 20 years ago but of course all has changed any must sees that can be done in day. Information on how to get to cruise ships. I may be the one to escourt an eldery client back to SF on ship. Thanks in advance
1. Cruise -- you need to get to Canada Place, at the North side of downtown Vancouver. Almost any place in downtown will be within 10 minutes by taxi to the cruise terminal.
2. Cheap and safe hotel -- as long as you stay away from downtown east side. Check out Best Western Chateau Granville, http://www.chateaugranville.com/location.html. Not the most charming location (strip clubs etc), but I consider it safe.
3. Things to do in one day -- You can take a half day bus tour, like this one I went on: http://www.vancouvertours.com/tours_1.html. The tour bus will pick you up and drop you off from your downtown hotel. Or, you can spend a day in Stanley Park, visit the Aquarium, walk or take the free trolley, have lunch at the Fish House or the Prospect Grill in the park, visit the rose garden and enjoy an afternoon tea.
Thanks keep those ideas coming. I will basically have 1/2 day Sat and Sat evening and Sunday Morning before I meet my charge shipside from that point on I doubt I will have much time for anything.
Joanne I am not sure what you consider cheap, but I have to say that Vancouver hotels are notoriously NOT cheap! Since you are looking for just one weekend night you may find a special in a business hotel. The other option would be to bid at Priceline. As SteveS noted, avoid the East Side.
You haven't mentioned what your interests are, we have a great Art Gallery, the new (well not so new now) library complex, numerous parks and gardens, interesting neighbourhoods for shopping/eating.
Either give us some idea of what interest you, or simply do a seach for Vancouver - you will find there is quite a lot of information here. Reading these notes will get you started.

Hi Joanne, We've stayed at a few hotels in Vancouver; however, none are close to Canada Place. Most are on or near Robson Street which has lots of great shops and restaurants and is walking distance to Stanley Park.
We recently stayed at the Executive Hotel but it's about 7 blocks from Robson and not at all convenient to where the cruise ships come in. But it was a great hotel.
I agree with Steve on a visit to Stanley Park or the Aquarium. Or you might take a cab to Granville Island with its great public market and tons of shops. Vancouver's a fantastic city with so much to do. You'll just have to plan another trip!
Hey Sheena! We must have been posting at the same time!

Joanne - Sorry, I am not familiar with Vancouver hotels. To-day, the temperature here is 19c, Sunday it is expected to be 28c. By the end of Sept. we can expect it to be cooler possibly with rain. Steve has given you some good suggestions. I recommend the Art Gallery, Stanley Park, Granville Islan. Cheers, J.M.

Just a note of thank to everyone who offered suggestions. I ended up staying at the Lonsdale Quay – Party I was escorting was living nearby. A little far out but I had fun using the sea ferry, and riding the sky train, and since pickup at the airport was arranged I got a quick overview of the general area. I found Vancouver quite expensive overall and very very crowded. The surrounding countryside offered much more appeal and I was able to take a short drive Sunday morning to explore some of it. Ship trip was a mixed bag. We were whisked right on with no problems and since we had meals in the room no fighting the hassle of getting seated or where to eat. I did chat with several people on board during my walks round the decks, who said it was almost impossible to get into dinning rooms, the weather was great many people were swimming, I had thought it would be to cold to do that. Sailing down the various sounds was a feast for the eye, sadly no whale sightings. Cold and windy coming into San Francisco. Disembarkation was a total nightmare. But once we got to the car waiting for us all was well. Thanks again………….jh
