I am going to San Diego on Thursday, will head back Saturday night.

Do you have any restaurants to recommend in the Gaslight Quarter?

I am also thinking of going down to Tiajuana for the day. I would have to be back for a program in San Diego at 6 PM. I will be staying at a hotel on Ash St between Third and Fourth.

Can I do get to Tiajuana on public transportation? Any advice about what transportation to take and where to catch it? Is this time frame do-able? Any idea of time allowances for travel to and from Tiajuana?

Do I need a passport to enter Mexico?

What do you recommend to do in Tiajuana?

Any other advice you have to offer is most welcome!

Regarding restaurants -

Well, as much for the story and the music as for the food, there's Croce's Restaurant and Jazz Bar, run by Jim's widow Ingrid. If I remember accurately, the food was interesting and quite satisfactory.

You can take the San Diego Trolley to the border and then walk over to Tijauna. The trolley from downtown takes about an hour to get to the border.

Trolley to San Ysidro

It's not exactly in the gaslamp but I really like Cafe Chloe.

I believe you do not need a passport to go from the US to Tijuana, but I think you DO need a passport now to come back.

Also, be careful while you are there, incidents of violence toward American tourists have been increasing lately.

With your time frame, I would recommend that you forego Tijuana. Even though you will not be in the vehicle line returning, just the walking through border control can be difficult and lengthy. Once you cross the border into Baja, you will need to take a taxi into TJ. I don't know the latest on passports.

Restaurants? There are many good ones. La Strada--Italian, Blue Point-fish, just walking along 5th, you will have numerous choices, most of which are good. One of the fun things in Gaslamp is to stroll the street, checking menus and making a decision.

Have fun.
