These are two major destinations that we have not as yet visited and so we are going to detour there during our Sept vacation. The idea is to spend an afternoon/evening plus one full day in this region. The question is do we devote the full day to Canyonlands and an afternoon to the Arches or the other way round? At least we will be able to experience sundown at both. Thanks in advance. John.
Canyonlands and Arches are two very different experiences. Canyonlands is huge, but little of it is available by car (most off-road or hiking); it's also much wilder. Arches is very small and almost everything is accessible from the road or a short hike. Arches tends to be more crowded. Arches one of my most favorite places in the world. I love the hike to Delicate Arch, especially if you leave early in the morning. I also really like the ranger-led hike to the Fiery Furnace. Moab also has a great restaurant, called the Center Cafe.
Moab is a great little town too - it might be fun to spend more time there and at Arches. But I have not been to Canyonlands - so can't really compare. There are some wonderful backroads south from Moab.
Thanks Constance & Pauline....It appears they are close enough together to split the time as it suits us. Really looking forward to to experiencing these fantastic locations. So much to see...so little time! J.
They flew into Denver, drove to Grand Junction, to Moab, to both parks, on the Million Dollar Highway to Silverton and Durango. Today they were at Mesa Verde. Only 5 days into their trip and they are in heaven - loving the driving, loving the scenery. Some of the trees are changing color already in Colorado.
I look forward to hearing more details when they get home. Tomorrow they go to the Grand Canyon, then up into Utah!
