We just returned from our rather impromptu trip to Oaxaca over Semana Santa, spurred on in great part by an earlier post on this board. The trip was indeed magical. Can highly "second" Margorie's recommendation for Las Bugambilas--a charming and comfortable B&B with incredible breakfasts and a fantastic location, easy walking to everything. Due to some renovations, we were moved for the last few days to another property owned by the same family--Casa Los Milagros--and while it was a bit of an inconvenience to move (for once we thought we'd actually be "Slow Travelers" and stay in one place an entire week--it just wasn't to be!), the new place was even more special than the first. And with the same fantastic mexican breakfasts. (Unfortunately, it didn't come with the sweet tabby cat that made Las Bugambilas feel like home!) The location wasn't quite as central, and we missed having "La Olla" restaurant adjoining so that we could have our nightly pre-dinner margaritas on the roof terrace. But we'd highly recommend either accomodation.
Holy week in Oaxaca is something to experience. I can't even begin to describe it in words, but in a few weeks I hope to have some photos up on my web site. Oaxaca in general is a beautiful, friendly city, great food, fascinating and colorful markets, easy to navigate and negotiate, and of course, great shopping, especially if one explores the outlying villages. I have to admit this is the first trip where we actually had to buy a new suitcase to bring home purchases (ah, those rugs....) and we have more things being shipped!!
I do regret we didn't have time for a cooking class, but that leaves something for next time. It seems like just about every B&B and restaurant chef offers classes.
If anyone is planning a trip to this area I'd be happy to give suggestions and recommendations.
Hi Pauline, I should be able to manage some Travel Notes--a full trip report seems too daunting but short tidbits I think I can handle ;-) I do have many suggestions for restaurants, markets, shopping, etc. The trip report will have to be a photo essay!
Sorry for the delay to respond here, I've been off-line for awhile..was in Hawii for 10 days. Hopefully will have those photos up soon ;-)
Thanks for your kind compliments!
Anyway, all the photos on my site were taken with either a Nikon N90s or Nikon F100--film camera, not digital. 99% slide film. A variety of lenses but mostly for all shots except the birds I use a 21-105 Sigma lens. For the birds I have an 80-400 Nikon VR (thats Vibration Reduction, so you can use it sometimes without a tripod.)
I did recently get a Nikon 5700 digital to enter the digital world and some of my Hawii shots were taken with that...I'll be posting them soon. To my eye, still doesn't come up to the quality of film, but there are certainly lots of advantages.
Nice to be back here, I'll try and come by more often again.
