have to attend a wedding at one of the all inclusive resorts, would like to know is it possible to leave the resort and explore the area on our own, have heard stories that it is not safe to do so. we are experienced travellers but do not want to take stupid chances, also if we stay at a different resort in punta cana how easy is it to get from one resort to the next.

George, we were in Punta Cana a few years ago. It was my understanding that the east coast of DR was a safe and isolated area. I didn't see any signs of increased security (like armored guards in the north) in this area.

The hotels offer group tours around the region, so that could be another option to exploring on your own.
