The thread in the France forum about art in Paris's Musée d’Orsay inspired me to check the dates of this upcoming exhibit:
quote:
The exhibition includes approximately 100 paintings from the Musée d’Orsay’s permanent collection and highlights the work of William-Adolphe Bouguereau, Gustave Courbet, Edgar Degas, Edouard Manet, Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley, and James Abbott McNeill Whistler, among others. The Musée d’Orsay is lending their most beloved paintings while it undergoes a partial closure for refurbishment and reinstallation in anticipation of the museum’s 25th anniversary in 2011.

de Young Museum - May 22 to September 6, 2010

Birth of Impressionism will be followed in the fall of 2010 by Van Gogh, Gauguin, Cezanne, and Beyond: Post–Impressionist Masterpieces from the Musée d’Orsay. The de Young will be the only museum in the world to host both exhibitions. Tickets go on sale April 6, 2010.

The upper floors of Musée d’Orsay are closed for renovation. That's why much of their collections are on tour.

We visited Musée d’Orsay about three weeks ago. The ground floor galleries were filled with the paintings not on tour, hung very densely on the side gallery walls.

We missed seeing many impressionist and post impressionist paintings, but it looks like, since we're members of the San Francisco art museums, we'll have the opportunity to see what we missed later this year!

Wow, lucky San Franciscans. Two (more) excellent reasons to make a visit.

Oh, boy! After we get back from France, we'll have to go out to the City by the Bay to visit friends and family - and the de Young. We've been meaning to do that for a while. Now this is a good reason to head west.

OK Terry and Annie - when you decide on your dates, you know you have to let us know - us Bay Area STers are really good at GTGs.

This sounds like a wonderful exhibit and opportunity, and a great reason for another SF GTG.

Thank you Colleen for the post. We aren't much into museums, but this could well be worth it.

And to see some east coast friends ... Smile

I can't say that I was really planning a visit; more longing to make one. But your extended West Coast hospitality is so tempting, and I must say that now the idea of a trip to SF is in my head.... I'll keep you all posted. I have some free time in June.

Thanks for the reminder. I was intrigued to see there is the possibility of private, docent-led tours in the mornings before the museum opens to the public.

I've requested info and will report. Having waded through the King Tut exhibit while it was mobbed crowded with school groups, I could be interested.

oh, that sounds really nice! My friend Margo lives close to Golden Gate Park - I could stay over with her the night before and then walk over to the museum. Thanks! Thumbs Up

In the meantime, I reserved two late afternoon tickets for a Saturday in June. Hope the crowds have cooled down by then!

Watch this space and the GTG forum for news of a docent tour of the exhibit. These early morning (9 a.m.) tours before the museum opens are all booked up for June. I am contemplating a July Saturday and will post when I have a date.

The maximum group size is 25, which sounds heavenly to me after another noisy, crowded experience at the California Academy of Science last week.
