Wife and I are planning to visit the US while the dollar is weak. We have ten days and are thinking:
July 1 - fly into New York - Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building July 3rd - Head to DC (see fireworks) July 5th - Head to Philly - Liberty Bell, Art Museum July 6th - Fly to San Francisco (Fishermans Warf, Alcatraz) July 8th - Drive to Los Angeles (Hollywood, that famous Chinese theatre) July 10 - Fly Home
Do you think we will have time to do a day trip to California wine country while in San Franciso?
Anything we're missing?
Thanks for your help.

If you're serious, are you assuming that this is the one and only time you'll be in the US? Your question is about impossible to answer. The US is a very big country, and of course you're missing a whole lot of things - and places, including the whole of the US between the coasts ("fly-over country"). But what do you really want to see and do?
My suggestion, and probably that of most people on these boards, would be to focus on one or a few places and save the rest for another time. It sounds like you're coming from the UK or the continent, right? At the very least, then, I'd recommend spending the ten days on the east coast.
Are your dates set? It would make more sense to go from NY to Philly and then to DC, or the reverse, rather than back-tracking. You could take the train from one to the other. Of course, there's a lot more to each of those cities than what you've listed, but I am glad that you're including my hometown of Philadelphia. Also, expect DC to be quite crowded on July 4th, especially for the fireworks (and hot, probably).
While your trip is "not exactly Slow Travel" (as seen many times on these boards), you're definitely hitting the high points of America. As we all know, there's just not much to see between New York and California - so why bother!
You absolutely have time to visit Napa while in San Francisco - you've got TWO WHOLE DAYS there!!
Before you leave Los Angeles, I suggest a quick visit to Tiajuana, Mexico. Really, it's so close it would be a shame to miss it. Then you could tell your friends you visited not one but two foreign countries! Priceless, indeed.

Mr. B, I think you should rethink your plans. You should just fly into Orlando and spend 5 days at Disney World. Then fly to LAX and spend your last 5 days at Disneyland. That way you can experience Slow Travel and see all there is to see of the US. Plus, mouse ears make lovely souvenirs.
Any thoughts on why I somehow think this query is legit while SeeItAll's is not? I was dubious, but the fella registered a while back. Note his post on Terry's thread about her Philadelphia travel notes.

Excellent point, Happy Idiot! (How I loved typing that name ... )
MrBaggins - it's really easy to avoid gang violence in LA. Looking at your map (you have a map, right?), simply draw big red x's through the area between Ventura County in the north, the San Gabriel Mountains in the east, the Pacific Ocean in the west, and Orange County in the south. The rest of LA is perfectly safe!!

Because Kim is better at this than me!!
You know, you could do a 10 day trip to the US and see a bunch of places - and I am even convinced that a 3 day trip to Italy is possible. I learned something today...
I happen to live in Los Angeles. My suggestion would be to spend some quality time in an area called South Central L.A. There is this new community game taking place that I find unbelievably entertaining! It's become so popular the news channels air it regularly and I hear it's even getting some world press!
South Central is THE place to go for that new game of dodge the bullet. No, it's not scary at all, so don't be fooled by those sour pusses who lost and are merely complaining because they didn't win. You simply drive through the area and if you'll know when you've stumbled into this wonderful community game when people start firing at your car. No, they are NOT real bullets, of course! It's just a game, after all...
My god, I can't wait to go back! It is truly the only place to experience the real L.A. Last I heard they were serving punch and cookies to anyone who came out to play. What fun!

Well, using MrB's original itinerary as a starter, I suppose 5 or 6 days in NY and 4 or 5 in Philly or DC wouldn't be too unreasonable for a first trip.

P.S. Sorry, Kathy, but I didn't find your post about L.A. all that amusing - more like disturbing. I guess I don't see too much humor in violence.
Well, I, for one, would like to send out a big THANK YOU to all who participated in every one of the day's joke board postings. I was feeling a bit down and put out and wanting to take a break from posting for a while, but upon discovering the various joke posts, I remembered why I joined up so many years ago.
And besides, you made an otherwise very dull evening, in which I was ready to fall asleep but knowing I needed to stay awake, highly enjoyable and full of giggles!
Sugar cookies! The little ones with pink sprinkles in animal shapes! You know, the kind you make when you're feeling playful and don't want to take things too seriously.
