This site has been a big help in the past and hoping you all can come through again.
Been searching all over for a really nice B&B in SF but nothing has clicked yet. Would love a place in a pretty neighborhood - centrally located. Preference for a Victorian house with nice antique furnishings. Awesome breakfast is a must. Lots of charm and character appreciated.
Have you looked here for some suggestions? The Washington Square Inn is in the middle of North Beach. A great neighborhood, but the inn may not exactly match your preferences.
Good luck! gloria

Kevin, I know this is not a B&B, but near the Powell Street Station there is the Andrews Hotel, which has a breakfast buffet in the corridor right outside your room each morning. Its very European, cozy, free videos, small rooms but they do have private baths. Service is fine and there is a wonderful, romantic restaurant on the first floor. I forget the street but you can google it I know.

Gloria - Hi, thanks for the suggestion. That looks like it might fit the bill and you are right that the North Beach neighborhood is very nice.
Karrie - thanks as well. Looks nice, but definately in search of a B&B. Really looking forward to sitting down and having someone make breakfast for us after a long season here !
And yes Pauline, I know we should look into rentals - perhaps once we are retired - again !
Kevin, If there are any B&B's you'd like checked out, send me an email. I'm only about an hour from SF, and would be happy to see if reality matches the net presence.
There's a Monet exhibit I've been wanting to see at the Legion of Honor, so it wouldn't be a chore to visit the City for a day ...

Especially Donna for the Iloveinns.com web site. It looks like they may have some kind of 2fer deal on B&Bs, and a couple of the places I was interested in are on their list. I am going top call them now and check it out.
And thanks Colleen for the offer to check out places. We are now thinking about the Archbishop's Mansion. I like the location right on Alamo Square and the rooms seem huge and decidedly funky/charming. Not cheap, however, and some comments on tripadvisor (especially concerning the breakfast) have me worried. But I guess you can't have everything and if we could get the rooms at 2 nights for the price of one, it would be worth it.
Funny, on the same trip we are going to Olympia, WA and found a great looking B&B there in about 2 seconds. SF (San Francisco to all you Santa Fe residents) is proving much more difficult.
Ever since I first saw your post, I've been trying hard to remember the names of the places I've used in San Francisco. Over the years, I've stayed in several B&B's and small hotels in the Union Square area when I was going there regularly for professional conferences. I know the Andrews Hotel was one, but I have been attempting without success to retrieve the name of the nice B&B where I last stayed. Finally, I went to the B&B website and saw the name Petite Auberge. From its location, I'm pretty sure that's the one. If so, I would certainly recommend it. Check it out.
Also, I, personally, would prefer the Nob Hill area to Alamo Square, if you don't mind the regular walk up the steep hill. I think it would be safer; I'll check with some of my many relatives who live in the Bay Area.
I think you mught like the Hotel Drisco, located in Pacific Heights. I stayed there quite awhile ago...it was called the El Drisco then. I loved it. It is located in a residential neighborhood, but very close to everything. I checked recent reviews on Tripadvisor and they are quite positive. Here's a link: Drisco Hotel

Kevin - nothing to add to the suggestions you've gotten so far - but -- when will you be in SF? Any time for a GTG? Would be fun to meet you, and there are several of us around here who are ready to GTG whenever.

I am not a big fan of vacation rentals in US/Canada cities. In Europe - yes! In US/Canada resort areas - yes! But in cities like San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, Toronto, Vancouver - we always stay in hotels. Usually a small hotel.
It is probably because we got burned by a vacation rental in NYC in 1997 - the worst place we have ever rented and we rented it from an agency (NY Habitat) that people still have good things to say about! Also because with a hotel you can book or cancel at the last minute. And we are usually going for less than a week.
