It's been too long since we've been to New York, so we're going to celebrate my birthday in style this year. But I can't remember the names of hotels we used to like along 59th St, or Madison mid-town. Can anyone suggest some nice, older, classy hotel names? The St. Moritz, was that one? Also, what's the best way to get a weekend deal on a good NYC hotel these days? Surely there must be some good bargains around. How can I find a bargain at the Algonquin, for example? That would be fun!
Here's a link to Smart Deals and I see the Algonquin at the top of the list. My favorite is the Stanhope. But I'd go to the Mercer Kitchen in Soho for Sunday brunch. Have fun!
We have a room booked for a week at the Belvedere. A cousin swears by it, and others here have given it a thumbs up. We got a price of $155 (average) for 7 days, with king sized bed, microwave and fridge. I understand there's a nice little bodega nearby, and it's a block or two from Restaurant Row.

Libbie, I find good deals for NYC hotels through www.expressreservations.com Their service is excellent and you don't need to pay in advance. Great bargains! For weekends in May, the Omni Birkshire has superior rooms for $199. It's at 52nd and Madison. The rooms are large, pastel-coloured, very elegant and they have beautiful marble bathrooms. It's not an "old" hotel, but it is classy. They used to have a flutist playing in the lobby at tea time!
Room was fine (if a little warm). The windows do open. Close to Broadway and lots of restaurants around. There was indeed a small kitchenette in the room. Not much character. I got a good deal through Hotel Express (mentioned in the post above) - they have a web site too.
I've also stayed recently at the Gorham Hotel which is very small but nice. The President of the hotel lives there. They have two room suites and also regular rooms. Regular room is fine for two people. They also have a web site with web specials on it. (I'm sorry I don't have the site, but you can search for it using the hotel name) They have kitchenettes also.
I stayed at the Intercontinental (the Barclay, not the one on Central Park). It had the nicest trappings, but the room was the smallest and the bathroom was also very tiny.I actually preferred The Gorham and the Belvedere.
I also stayed at the Gorham hotel, although it was 2 years ago. I stayed with my husband and 3 children. We had a 2 room suite, with a tiny kitchenette that was supplied with dishes, forks, spoons, small fridge, microwave. I recall thinking that the bathroom was a pretty good size. they served a continental breakfast at the hotel(expensive). there was a little bakery(one of many) right across the street. We purchased croissants and muffins and made coffee in our room. One thing you may want to look into is the NYC Entertainment book. I believe that we were able to get a pretty good deal(50% off?) through the book. By the way, the Carnegie Deli is right around the corner and you will be in close proximity to the park, Rockefeller Center, theaters, etc. It's a great location. Have fun!

I know this reply is a little late as I just read this thread ....Anyway, I stayed at the Belvedere this past September and it was an average room and the staff was very nice. It is great midtown location on the westside just blocks from Time Sqaure. I just stayed this past March at the Roosevelt which is on Madison and 45th(east side) which is still midtown 1 block fromr grand central and a couple blocks from 30 Roc and St Patricks Cathedral. The hotel is recently refurbished and the rooms are very nice. I paid only a few dollars more to stay at the Roosevelt than I did at the Belvedere and I have to say I enjoyed my experience there a whole lot more. The Roosevelt is more elegant(beautiful lobby and lounge area). You can go to the Roosevelt Website and sign up for e-deals and they will send you info on any package deals they are offering. I got a winter special where I paid for 2 nights go one free and got a comp breakfast everyday which was very good. Although my best friends have now moved to Manhattan and I don't have to use a hotel I highly recommend it to everyone who asks me. Have a great time! I am going over the July 4th weekend to celebrate my birthday !!!! Wahoooo

I just found out that I got into the New York City marathon in November and so now I have to find a room during a time when rates notoriously get raised a bit.
Thank you so much for the great expressreservations site. I was able to get The Roosevelt (heard about it here) for $100 less per night than the site I was using.
I love Slow Travelers and always come here first for recommendations and suggestions.

Congrats on your getting into the NYC marathon! that is awesome. You really will enjoy the hotel it is really nice. Also, I read through some of the previous posts again and someone mentioned the Algonquin hotel. Algonquin is in the midst of a major battle with some ex employees. I am not sure of the detail but when on my way to the Roosevelt I passed it on several occasions and they are out there every night protesting with signs and a big huge like 10 foot high ballon rat ...(yes you did read that last statement right !) it's hilarious but I don't know if I would want to deal with that everytime I go in and out of my hotel. ...I did see the giant rat when they were doing some city shots for something I was watching on TV recently. I will see if its still there when i'm there over the 4th! I will take a pic and post it !!!
