Sayulita is a quaint fishing village that caters mostly to surfers and american tourists that own homes and winter here Its about 45 minutes North of Puerto Vallarta. It still has that laid back feeling and hasn't been over developed. I was very surprised to find only one reference of it on this site when I did my search. We had a great time just laying around soaking up the sun and exploring secluded beaches, and the food was great. I will do a full trip report soon.
Here are a few pics. the first is sunrise from our casita and the other shows the bay and village and the background.
Oohhh.. that looks wonderful. I think people are trying to keep it secret.
It is becoming popular as a winter destination here in the Pacific Northwest especially with people who frequently go to Puerto Vallarta. I heard glowing reports of the town from some friends who went down in October.
If anyone else is curious to know more before llee does a trip report - check out this slideshow from NYT.
I think I saw a little video about this town on YouTube. A guy was wandering Mexico making vidoes on "what's really going on in Mexico" when tourists weren't traveling as much because of all the media coverage of drug violence. Basically it was to promote tourism. I'll see if I can find it!
We went to Playa del Carmen in March and I miss it!!!! SOOOO relaxing!
Marta, I like that slideshow, picture #5 is where we stayed, a casita at Casa Higuera, and #8 with the surfers and dogs says it all.
Sophia, talking with the local merchants the media coverage of the drug wars has really hurt their economy, and then of coarse the swine flu that put the nail in the coffin. The good news is things are starting to pick back up, they said 3 weeks ago, planes coming in were empty and ours was full coming from LAX.
You know, Mexico was never really on my radar screen before I came to SlowTravel - I always figured it was either too touristy or too underdeveloped. I was wrong!

OMG, Terry, Terry, Terry, Mexico is GORGEOUS! You must go! We are now completely in love with Isla Mujeres but there are many places on the west and east coast that are sublime...

That first photo from Sayulita is amazing. I've never been, happy to have stumbled upon this hidden gem though.
I just came back from a trip to Cancun with some girlfriends and all swine flu fears have seemingly disappeared. Good thing too, Mexico has always been one of my go-to vacation spots.
