Hi,

I've got a bee in my bonnet about getting to the Met to see the Americans in Paris exhibit with the Singer Sargent collection. Is there a nice hotel near by in the Upper East End that has 2 double beds that you would recommend?

Ginger!!

Are you thinking of coming to New York???

I saw on your Rome post that you have always been a little hesitant about visiting NYC...I am so excited to hear that you are considering it!

Right off the bat, let me say that you don't need to stay on the Upper East Side to visit the Met. Hell, stay wherever you want..I will take you to the Met. I go all the time and I live in Brooklyn. Getting around in New York is easy...it's really a big grid.

What is your price range per night?

Stella,

You are so cute Smile. My husband said the same thing, that we didn't have to stay near the museum so now I'll have to tell him he was right. Roll Eyes

I just want a nice normal size room with 2 double beds. They did have some packages on Expedia but I wasn't sure where to land, Midtown, Upper East, Upper West, Lower Manhattan.... I found out the museum was in the Upper East so I just thought it would be easier & closer and we could walk.

As for being a scaredy cat about NYC, my desire to see the exhibit outweighs my trepidations on visiting the city.

Get Together! When are you coming? For how long? If you don't mind the subways or a taxi, you could really stay almost anywhere. Also NYC is very walkable. Ginger, how much are you looking to spend per night?

We are thinking of coming December 26th thru the 30th. One of our scheduled holidays away from work. I found a package on Expedia airfare into Newark out of LaGuardia and staying at the Crown Plaza (3 stars) for $1590.00 total. It seems like a pretty good deal. The hotel got good reviews. Any comments?

Ginger, does that include taxes? If it does, for four nights plus your airfare, that is a pretty good deal, considering it is hard to find a hotel in New York around the holidays.

That is not to say that you can't find a similar price without a package.

Times Square is a hustling, bustling, and I find, surreal area of the city. Lots of flashing lights, people everywhere at all hours. It has an excitement about it, or on the other hand, you might find it overwhelming.

By the way, there are some nice reviews for NYC hotels on the Slow Travel site.

Check also the Westin in Times Square...I like that hotel.

I will do some digging for you later tonight.

Yay!

So true!

For someone who is a bit intimidated by The City, I think it would not be your best choice to stay right in the Times Square area.

Is the package $1590 per person or for both of you?

I'm taking my mom in October and we'll be staying at the Giraffe but it is farther, not nearer to the Met and also kinda pricey.

It was $1590.00 for two including all taxes. Our other choice was the Affina Gardens in the Upper East End, it's about $300.00 more.

Is this the hotel? It's at the north end of times square, which can be extremely crowded/hectic that time of the year (just as an FYI). I don't know anything about the Affinia Gardens but the location will definitely be a bit calmer.

We have tickets for an afternoon matinee of Les Mis on the 30th (with Becky) but so wouldn't mind coming in earlier in the week too, if you're up for a GTG.

I don't think so, it's this one by the United Nations. Les Miserables, a great great show. We saw it in London. My husband cried through out. (One of the reasons I married him, was because on our 2nd or 3rd date he cried when Bambi's mother got shot.)

Ginger - check orbitz.com as well. We got a great deal on airfare from Toronto and 4 nights at the Westin Times Square. Orbitz had many choices for that time. We're there December 22 - 26 and things may be harder to find for the 26th - 30th period because of the closeness to New Years.

Ginger - if you've already made your hotel reservations then please disregard this. But I have heard that you can get some amazing rates through Priceline.com. I've never used it - anyone???

I wouldn't think of near the UN as terribly convenient to the upper East Side, especially not for proximity the Met; those cross-town blocks are really long.

I have used Priceline. If you do research (look on www.biddingfortravel.com for guidelines on how to bid, where hotels are located vis-a-vis particular areas, and winning bids by other people, you may get a good deal.

We got a room at the Millenium last spring for $100. a night, Friday through Sunday. I probably wouldn't have chosen it if I were paying full price (too near Times Square), but for $100. a night, it couldn't be beat.

Ginger, that link didn't work for me - so it's this one: Crowne Plaza United Nations? You're at 2nd avenue and 42nd street, so about a 2 block (larger blocks) to the subway (4,5,6, and 7 lines). The Met is on 86th street and 5th avenue, walking would be well over two miles. To take the subway from this hotel would be taking the 4,5 or 6 to 86th street, then 3 blocks west to 5th avenue and a couple of blocks south or there's always a cab.

Sorry Jan Blushing, we fly out of Southwest Regional Airport (RSW) in Ft. Myers. As for a hotel, I'm trying to find one that isn't $300.00 a night for a Queen size bed. I just want a normal room with 2 doubles. Most standard rooms have one double and then prices go through the roof. I will look on Priceline.

Ginger,
I plugged your dates into Expedia, searching for a flight + hotel for two people, taking you out of Ft. Myers, and have tons of choices for your dates. You then enter the savings code to get the 10th Anniversary discount they are offering.

It is harder with the two double beds, but I am looking at them all right now...

I am also looking in the NY Times Travel section, but it is a little early for print ads for the winter...

It is the two double beds thing that is going to shoot the price up.

I found two options that do not include that which are nice locations...

One is the The Hotel San Carlos, and the other is The Carlton on Madison Avenue. Neither includes the two double beds, but the Carlton features flat screen TV's, Frette Linens, a nice room layout.

The San Carlos has great reviews on Trip Advisor and is very convenient to the subway, so you can quickly and easily get to the Met and other places.

They are slightly more than the Crowne Plaza by the UN..which I also saw. The reason why the deal is so good there is that you are so far away from the action, even the subway is a bit of a haul from there.

What did you think of the Affina?

I think it looks really nice and it is also in a quiet location.

There is a positive review of another Affina hotel here on Slow Travel. If the price is right for you and you like the bed situation, I say go for it!!

Can I come for tea in the tea room?

sorry, I missed the part about needing 2 beds; priceline won't let you make that request.

I couldn't find the "Affina Hotel" on the web, but I did find "Affinia." If this is it, note that they have several hotels sprinkled through Manhattan.
