My daughter has suggested a quick (3 day, 2 night) visit to the Biltmore estate right after Christmas, when it's all still decorated for the holidays. We've never been and seeing it all decorated sounds fantastic. Staying on the property is a little out of our price range. Does anyone have a recommendation for a nice budget alternative? It doesn't have to be the cheapest place, just one with clean rooms, maybe a nice breakfast buffet and good value for money.

I stayed in Asheville at one of the major chains. I can't remember which one - Days Inn or Red Roof. It was fine. The town is charming and I really liked it. Here is a link to the tourism website which has many different options.

I found some good deals at Days Inn but my daughter is boycotting them due to a bad experience! I did find a site that will let me compare area hotels, so if no one has any specific recommendations I'll just use that. thanks!

Barb,
I'm excited that I can finally share some information after being the recipient of so much good advice. Asheville is one of our favorite places to visit and we can recommend the following places to stay

1, The Renaissace Hotel in downtown Asheville; it's within walking distance of great restaurants and shopping but is a car ride to Biltmore. I see that it now a Mariott property; it may not be cheap but there may be good specials especially during the holidays.

2. The Sleep Inn Biltmore is extremely close to the Biltmore, may not be the cheapest option in town but is clean, quiet, has large rooms, and good proximity.

3. Our favorite place is Willow Winds which rents a variety of wonderful cabins -- not your basic budget place, but specials and this year's economy might make this a good spot for a couple of days. We spent two weeks there at Christmas time several years ago and are looking forward to a return soon.

Hope this helps.
