Barb, I'm excited that I can finally share some information after being the recipient of so much good advice. Asheville is one of our favorite places to visit and we can recommend the following places to stay 1, The Renaissace Hotel in downtown Asheville; it's within walking distance of great restaurants and shopping but is a car ride to Biltmore. I see that it now a Mariott property; it may not be cheap but there may be good specials especially during the holidays. http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/avlbr-renaissance-asheville-hotel/2. The Sleep Inn Biltmore is extremely close to the Biltmore, may not be the cheapest option in town but is clean, quiet, has large rooms, and good proximity. http://www.biltmorefarmshotels.com/sleepinn/index.aspx3. Our favorite place is Willow Winds which rents a variety of wonderful cabins -- not your basic budget place, but specials and this year's economy might make this a good spot for a couple of days. We spent two weeks there at Christmas time several years ago and are looking forward to a return soon. http://www.willowwinds.com/Hope this helps. Marilyn
