My sister used to make the trip regularly. Amtrak does it in 1 1/2 hours (although if this is for soon, I know there will be some cancellations in June for construction). Greyhound or Peter Pan run bus service, which can take longer because of stops.

I don't know whether you've been to the renovated Grand Central Terminal, but if not, consider taking Metro North and leaving some time to look around in the truly impressive GCT. I think that Metro North trains take a little longer than Amtrak, but the station experience of Grand Central (Metro North) versus Penn Station (Amtrak) could not be more different. Can you tell that I'm still in mourning for the late, great Penn Station of my childhood, whose demolition was one of the greatest architectural sins ever committed in NYC?

Metro North is cheaper and runs all the time.

Got this last night in an e-mail from Amtrak:

Service Alert: Acela Express and Regional Service Temporary Cancellation June 14 - 17 Affecting Travel Between Boston, New Haven and New York

For four days, beginning June 14 through June 17, Amtrak will replace the movable span of the 90-year-old Thames River Bridge, located between Groton and New London, Connecticut. To accommodate this project, service cancellations will be made affecting travel between Boston, New Haven and New York.

This is the final stage of a multi-year project designed to improve the reliability of the bridge, reduce the chance of operational failures and minimize train delays.

During this four-day track outage, Amtrak will also perform a maintenance "blitz" between Boston and New Haven that will provide passengers with a smoother ride and significantly improve the reliability of the railroad.

* Learn more about the Thames River Bridge Project (PDF file attached below).

June 14 through June 17

Acela Express Cancellations

* All Acela Express service will be cancelled between Boston and New York.

Regional Cancellations

* All Regional trains operating between Boston and New Haven (by way of Providence) will be cancelled, while some Regional trains will be cancelled between New Haven and New York.

June 15 through June 17 — Added Amtrak Service

* On June 15 through June 17, Amtrak will add a special train that will operate northbound and southbound between Washington, New Haven, Springfield, Boston and intermediate stations.

New Haven - Springfield Service

* Service between New Haven and Springfield will not be affected.

June 18 Only

Regional Trains 95 and 171 Service Cancellations

* Regional Trains 95 and 171 will be cancelled between Boston and New Haven.

* All other trains will operate according to the published schedules.
