Hi all,

I'm visiting NYC early next spring with 12 colleagues from the Netherlands. I have reasonable experience of the US and wouls like to share this with my colleagues. The only thing I can't decide upon is the venue for our meal together. I was toying with the idea of trying a Soul Food restaurant, but I can't seem to find anything in the Manhattan area. Does anybody have any ideas for me? Failing the Soul Food thing, than does anyone know of another typical "American Experience"? (And please, please don't say "hamburgers"- but then again I wouldn't expect that of this good forum, anyway Smile.

Many thanks,

Carl.

Carl, we used to go to a good "soul food" place but it was up in the Bronx (we'd go before Yankee games - my brother's friend used to own it). It's still there and not difficult to get to by subway - if you're interested let me know.

Within Manhattan, how about bbq? I'm trying to remember the name of the place we went to in Soho and can't. I'll find out from my friend and let you know.

Kim,

Thanks for taking the time to reply. The Bronx is a bit far away for us as we only have the one day to see everything. The BBQ sounds good though. '

The BBQ idea is good.
How about a steak house? There is something quintessentially American about beefsteak!

What about Sylvia's Soul Food Restaurant in Harlem? I've heard a lot about it, but I've never been there. It's probably the most famous one in the city. And this Website should provide you with plenty of information:
http://local.yahoo.com/NY/New+York/Food+Dining/Restaura...oul+Food+Restaurants.
You can get BBQ and steak in many places, but I think soul food would provide a particularly unique US experience. (And as both a former New Yorker and Kansas Citian, I certainly wouldn't associate BBQ with New York. Besides, you can get BBQ at many soul food restaurants.) I think I'd opt for Sylvia's or Justin's. You can get music with your meal at the latter as well.

Sylvia's is good option, were it not that I've no idea how to get there. Any ideas?

I found a nice site menupages.com that offers listings by catagory and location for New York. They also have online menus for most of the places they list along with reviews. I use it now when I visit NY or am looking for something new that I want to try.

We went to Tavern on the Green in Central Park just for the cheesecake, Roll Eyes which is the best we've ever had, and the restaurant is very charming too.

Do what any New Yorker would do -- take the subway. Here is a website with subway maps:
http://www.nycsubway.org/maps/route/.
Not knowing where you would be, I can only offer general advice. That would be to do what the famous song by Billy Strayhorn recommends: "Take the A Train." Shannon You'd get off at 125th St. & 8th Ave. and walk two blocks east. Isn't that right, any of you New Yorkers? To me, that would be a whole lot more fun than going to the newly yuppified East Village, especially since you seem to want a distinctively "American Experience." What's more, Sylvia's is big enough that you could probably reserve a room for you and your colleagues.
