What's the best way to take a day trip to Tivoli from Rome that uses public transport?
Thanks

The website www.twenj.com (traveling with Ed and Julie) has public transportation directions to Tivoli under the excursions section. We plan to use them in June unless someone posts something better.

Hello,
We found the journey from Rome to Tivoli quite easy on the bus although it was packed full. We came back on the train and that was just as easy but we had room to sit down as it was just before the rush hour.
I long to return. The garden at the villa D'Este just bowled me over but make sure you plan your trip around days when they run the fountains or you won't see it quite at it's best if you are planning to visit. There is enough to see and do in and around Tivoli for a long week end in my opinion or as a "slowtraveller" a long week!
Have fun planning !

Wendy,

How do you find out when they run the fountains?

Hi Millie,
I have learnt that the best way to find these things out is to e mail the superintendent of the property,
www.villadestetivoli.info
Tourist offices can be very helpful but if you check twice it can't hurt !

I have been to Villa D'Este on numerous occasions and I have never once seen the fountains. Maybe it was a fluke?

In addition, i feel the easiest public transport to/from Tivoli is the train. The train departs Roma Termini and take just under an hour to get to Tivoli. From the Tivoli station, you have about a 10 minute walk to Villa D'Este or to the bus stop to catch the bus to Hadrian's Villa.

Hi Tony,
We have only been once and about 80% of the fountains were working. The others were being restored. It was a fabulous experience.
They don't run them all the time on a day when they are on so maybe we were lucky.

I meant to say that I have never once seen the fountains NOT working. Sometimes this fountain or that fountain would not be working but the majority were. Sorry for the mistake.

hammerj, yes the departures are only from Tiburtina. Another mistake on my part.

I don't know what I was thinking when I wrote that post. 2 mistakes in one little post? Frown
