We just dropped off a rental in Chiusi, and took the train to Rome. I had encountered a number of threads about the Avis location, before going on our trip, and now can give some up-to-date info: [LIST] 1. There is a Hertz office across the street from the station. 2. There is an Avis office "in the vicinity" of the station, but definitely not across the street (there is a sign indicating that the office is 600 meters down the street from the station, but that is not correct). 3. Here is how you get to the Avis office:
Go past the station on the one-way street in front of the station and turn on the first left one-way steet.
Take this street until you reach the intersection at the end of the bridge that goes over the rail yard. Turn right and go over the bridge.
At the other end of the bridge turn left into a commercial/industrial area and take the first major street right (Molino?).
Avis is a the end of the street, housed in an Auto dealership, Fiat, I think.
Even though there is, allegedly, a pedestrian walkway under the rail yard that would allow you to walk to the Avis office, I can't imagine negotiating it with baggage (or without, for that matter).
If you have access to a phone, I recommend calling the Avis office. They will probably come over and pick you up. They drove me back to the station after I dropped off my rental. They are very aware of the current difficulties with their location. The very helpful agent told me that they are trying to find a location for an office nearer the station

It looks like Avis is on Via Molise, and the previous left is on Via Abruzzo; you've crossed into Umbria. Thanks for the help on a topic that comes up often.
I am such a dope sometimes! Here's our story from a couple of weeks ago: We had booked Chiusi car rental from AutoEurope before so I didn't even really look at the email contract. We get to Chiusi, toddle across the street to the car rental, and the "Hertz" sign didn't even register until I pulled the paper out of my folder. surprise. What happened next? The (expletive) guy manning the Hertz office tells us Avis is in Citta della Pieve (which it DOES say on the form, for reasons that remain mysterious to me) so we go back to the train station to the tabbachi for bus tickets, wait for it, go there. I get my cell phone to work and call the Avis office, and since we have been dumped off the bus at the top the pleasant agent says he will pick us up in 10 minutes. I describe where we are and he seems to know it. 10 minutes pass. 10 more. 10 more and I call again, thinking how stupid it is to tell someone to meet you in a piazza with a church of Madonna della something with a WW1 memorial, when that could be nearly any town. Cell phone won't work again. I trot off to the TI where I cannot make myself understood until someone who speaks French drops in and I have enough French to explain the problem properly, and she talks to the Avis guy on the phone in Italian. He had been looking for us in Chiusi proper. He sounded really annoyed (I would be too!) but he softened when I apologized and the French-speaking woman grabbed the phone and apparently told him something disarming. 20 minutes later he picks us up and the first thing he says is that he's figured out why we are there: the Hertz guy sent us to the wrong place intentionally (?!!! !!!) because (Avis guy inhales dramatically) "They hate us." Apparently there is some Hatfield and McCoy stuff going on there. He had some stories.
In the end it all worked out, and the Avis guy (GianSilvio) was so nice--he could have just left us, since by the time we worked it all out their office had been closed for over an hour. He bent over backwards for us. That would have meant no car until Monday, as it was Saturday. Gary wanted to stop at Hertz on our way out and punch out the fella there, but it was closed.
There was no problem returning the car, BTW. Giansilvio was there and gave us a ride.
Morals: read your contract, pay better attention to the news on ST, and there's a Hertz employee in Chiusi who had better steer clear of my husband.
Trish, You are here! I haven't seen you post for quite awhile. So good to know you're toodling around Italy again. Is your house finished in LA? Where did you and Gary spend time in Italy? Take care, ciao, Cheryl
Hi Cheryl! House will probably never be finished since we just blew all the bathroom remodel money in Europe. It was worth it. I was more than a little burned out on caulking and such. We were in Provence & Paris, then Florence, Proceno again, Sorrento, Naples etc. How's your place in Umbria? I take it you didn't sell? I hope not.
I am so glad I came across this post today. I am in the process of getting my rental booked for our trip and I am very confused!! I am trying to book through Auto Europe. We are picking up in Florence and dropping off in Chiusi then taking the train to Rome. When I do a search on Auto Europe's website and select Chiusi Downtown (Via Cassia Aurelia) the vehicle comes with a CDW deductible of $125. When I select Chiusi Scalo (Via Molise) the CDW deductible is $590.
So it looks like the Scalo is Avis... I assume Downtown is Hertz. So which one do I pick? Based on this post I am not sure I want to deal with Hertz, but it is a better location and lower deductible. Any advise?
I have this thread "tagged" and was reading through your post. First of all, I'm sorry you had to go through the hassle with the Hertz-man. I'll be returning a car to Europcar on Via Cassia Aurelia....is that different from both Hertz and Avis? Now I'm more confused than ever.
I see nothing on my voucher other than Europcar.
thank you for any info.
Mindy
***I just noticed the post above mine from Asugrad....we are doing the exact same thing, picking up in Florence and dropping off in Chiusi, then train to Rome. We will opt for the Super CDW ($10.50/day), by doing this it drops the deductible to "0", they won't hold any amount on the credit card. As we only have the car for 6 days it's worth the extra $$ to my sister and I. It really is very confusing.
The folks at AutoEurope are very very helpful. I imagine I'm on their "oh, no she's calling again" list!

You can easily confirm this info either by calling Auto Europe, or by simply asking for two separate quotes, one for each location. The returned email quotes will contain the names of the actual rental car company that's being used.
Personally, I'd go for the lower deductible and more convenient location (after all, you're merely dropping the car off so what can they screw up, especially with a zero deductible?). Otoh, if you have a credit card that provides car rental insurance, perhaps the deductible isn't an issue anyway?
Here's what I make of it: The one across the street from the train station is Hertz, and the address should be 22 Piazze Dante. The Avis office is on the other side of the tracks, exactly where SL Jones says (I saved the Avis map they gave us) and the address is Via Molise. These are the 2 Chiusi Scalo offices that I know about--AutoEurope apparently uses Avis. Both these are in Chiusi Scalo.
I would definitely call your rental broker for clarification and to make sure they will pick you up at the station. Since when I Mappy Via Cassia Aurelia in Chiusi it shows TWO Vias named that, one labeled "Via Cassia Aurelia Primo" which runs between the 2 Chiusis, the other labeled "Via Cassia Aurelia Seconda" which is closer to Chiusi-hilltown.
